Hartley Hall Nursing Home

This letter is in tribute to all the nurses at Hartley Hall Nursing Home in Pocomoke. Throughout the eleven years our brother was there, they cared for him, loved him and were friends. Though he presented them with many challenges, their patience was never ceasing. For their understanding, care, patience, friendship and allowing him the independence so vital to his life, we shall be forever grateful.

Tribute to a Special Nurse

I am writing to tell you about a very special nurse. Her name is Mia Cathell. She is a caring and energetic person, age 25, who works the 7 p.m. to 7 a.m. shift at Peninsula Regional Medical Center and even though she is extremely beautiful to look at, on the inside is where her real beauty lies. My name is Andrew Weber and I am 23 years old. On November 13th I was in a tremendously bad car accident and flown by helicopter to PRMC. I was unconscious and in ICU for five weeks in a coma. Thanks to the excellent care I received in ICU I was able to be transported to Bryn Mawr Rehabilitation Hospital where I eventually emerged from the coma. Although Mia does not work in ICY (she works on 3WestB) she was at my bedside almost every day and some nights, making sure I was not in pain, keeping an eye on all the beeping machines and tubes, helping my parents stay strong, saying a prayer and shedding many tears. She does not judge people and always tries to find a way to make them more comfortable and put them at ease. I want to thank her for all that she did and still does for me. Mia Cathell is an RN - but she is also my Sister.

(Written at the direction of Andrew Weber, who is learning to walk, talk and write again after a two month coma, 10 weeks at Bryn Mawr and now home in Delmar.)

This letter is in tribute to Sandra Pitman of the MCICU of PRMC

In January of this year, our brother was in the MCICU for 19 days with pneumonia and respiratory failure. Being a quadriplegic, he could not write, and being on a respirator, he could not talk. To some this would have been an insurmountable challenge, but not Sandy. Through her persistence, she learned to communicate with him and became not only a caregiver, but a friend. Throughout his stay, whenever we had a question, her time was ours. On his final day, she came to work at 7:30 a.m. and was to leave at 7 p.m. At 12:30 that night, we had to insist that she go home.

We feel indeed blessed to have had Sandra Pitman in our lives at this time. PRMC is fortunate to have her in the MCICU.

The nursing staff of Deer's Head Center wishes to convey our great admiration to our former Director of Nursing, Mrs. Reba Goslee. Mrs. Goslee was not only a Registered Nurse, but a natural born leader. KNOWLEDGE may simply be an accumulation of data, while WISDOM is the use of data with discretion and understanding. Mrs. Goslee possessed both knowledge and wisdom in her work and interactions with patients, their families and her staff. Mrs. Goslee ran a "Tight Ship" but we never heard her raise her voice; her few words were powerful.

We never found her partial or unfair and could count on her composure and resolve. She was a hard worker and never asked of her staff what she was not willing to do herself. Mrs. Goslee's office door was always open to us and we felt free to discuss not only matters of work, but of our family concerns. She maintained a high work standard and encouraged us to expand our education and she led by example.

You were our ROCK and strong foundation that made going to work a great pleasure. Thank you for your unwavering support and please know you had a profound effect on each of us. Your staff owes you a debt of gratitude for your many years of service and you input in shaping our careers and lives.
