Volunteer Week Projects to Clean-Up Communities
March 8, 2010

The Community Foundation’s ShoreCAN Volunteer Center is encouraging nonprofit organizations on Maryland’s Lower Eastern Shore to organize and support community clean-up and neighborhood improvement projects during National Volunteer Week from April 17-24.

During this year’s effort to promote volunteerism, "Celebrating People In Action" is the theme for National Volunteer Week and locally the observance will be centered around efforts that help to clean-up our local environment and neighborhoods.

In Somerset, Wicomico, and Worcester counties, nonprofit organizations are encouraged to contact the ShoreCAN Volunteer Center to let the community know what clean-up and neighborhood improvement activities are taking place in this region of the state.  Nonprofits will also benefit by having their projects posted on the ShoreCAN website where individuals can sign-up to volunteer for activities that are in their community.

To further encourage local volunteer efforts, the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore is offering two special grant opportunities to local nonprofits.  Organizations on the Lower Shore may apply for a National Volunteer Week Technical Assistance Grant to support volunteer clean-up or neighborhood improvement projects.  Grants will range from $100 to $500.

The Community Foundation is also encouraging nonprofit and faith-based groups to leverage a valuable resource in our local communities, volunteers age 50 and older, through a second grant program.  Through the Make a Big Difference Grant Program, nonprofit organizations can apply for grants up to $1,500 for projects that put the time, talent and expertise of volunteers age 50 and older to use to address needs in our community.

The deadline for applications for both grant programs is March 15th.  Community Foundation staff members are available to answer any questions about the application guidelines.  For more information visit www.shorecan.org or call Erica Joseph, CFES program officer, at 410-742-9911.

The ShoreCAN Volunteer Center actively connects individuals who want to volunteer with nonprofit organizations who offer meaningful opportunities to serve.  To learn more about volunteer opportunities on the Lower Shore visit www.shorecan.org or call 410-742-9911.
