PROFESSIONAL ADVISORS PROMOTE PHILANTHROPY
February 4, 2008
Professional Advisors Recognized for Promoting Philanthropy

Professional Advisors from Maryland’s Lower Eastern Shore were recognized recently for outstanding service in promoting philanthropy for the benefit of the community. The awards were sponsored by the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore (CFES) and presented at a recognition breakfast at the Foundation’s Eastern Shore Nonprofit Support Center in Salisbury.

“These awards recognize the contribution professional advisors have made in building relationships with the Foundation and for the assistance they have provided to their clients in establishing charitable funds for the benefit of the community,” said Spicer Bell, CFES President. “We appreciate the professionalism and expertise they add to charitable giving conversations with the people they advise on financial and legal matters.”

Charles “Chip” Dashiell and Ruth Donaway jointly received recognition as the Foundation’s 2008 Professional Advisors of the Year award.  Dashiell is the president of the Salisbury law firm of Hearne & Bailey. Donaway is the firm’s estates and trusts administrator.

They were recognized for their work with the Foundation over many years. Recently they were involved in settling the John and Hannah Handy estate which has resulted in two permanent endowment funds at the Foundation that will benefit the community of Crisfield. One fund enables grants to meet a variety of charitable needs and the other will provide a college scholarship for a Crisfield student in financial need.

Receiving 2008 Professional Advisor Recognition Awards were Robert Anderson and K. King Burnett.  Anderson is a financial advisor with the Merrill Lynch brokerage firm in SalisburyAnderson was recognized for recommending the Foundation to clients including his assistance in establishing the Mildred B. Gassman Art Appreciation and Education Fund, a permanent endowment to benefit the Art Institute and Gallery in Salisbury.

Burnett is a partner in the Salisbury law firm of Webb, Burnett, Jackson and Cornbrooks. A longtime advocate and pioneer in promoting environmental responsibility on Maryland’s Eastern Shore, he was instrumental in the establishment of three new endowment funds at the Foundation that benefit the environment.  Two of those funds support the work of the Lower Shore Land Trust, and the third is the Assateague Coastal Trust Founders Fund.

The Community Foundation will make a $500 grant to the nonprofit of choice by Dashiell and Donaway and $250 grants to the nonprofits of choice by Anderson and Burnett. The Foundation is the largest non-governmental source of support for nonprofit organizations in the Maryland lower shore counties of Somerset, Wicomico and Worcester.

Gifts to the Community Foundation, a public charity, create permanent endowment funds that steadily grow in value over time and produce income for grants to local charitable nonprofit organizations. In fiscal 2007 the Foundation made a total of 995 grants to the community representing $3.2 million.
