The Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore recently honored Del. Norman Conway with the presentation a Community Service Award recognizing him as an outstanding example of an individual for whom public service and volunteering have been a way of life.

The award was made during ribbon cutting ceremonies on October 14th that celebrated the official opening of the new home of the ShoreCAN Volunteer Center at the Community Foundation.

“It is an honor to present this Community Service Award to Norman Conway,” said Spicer Bell, CFES President. “Norm is an excellent example of what being a dedicated volunteer is all about.  He has a lifetime of achievement in volunteering and serving others from his support and work for nonprofits, community service organizations and through public service.”

Del. Conway was recognized for his active service with the following organizations:
·        Volunteer Fireman and Wicomico County Volunteer Fireman’s Assn.
·        Salisbury City Council (1974-87 / President 1986-87)
·        Member of Maryland House of Delegates (1987- Present)
·        Holly Center Citizens Advisory Board (1992-97)
·        Deer’s Head Center Citizens Advisory Board
·        Salisbury University Advisory Board for PACE (Public Affairs & Civic
         Engagement)
·        Governor’s Task Force on Eastern Shore Economic Development
·        Drug Court Oversight Committee
·        House Appropriations Committee (Vice-Chair 1995-2003 / Chair 2003-  Present)

“Del. Conway has a list of legislative assignments and accomplishments too long to mention,” Bell noted.  “But given the Foundation’s interest in education, I’d particularly like to cite Norm’s support of education.  Not only was he a member of the committee that first developed the Thornton funding model for the state, but he has consistently supported education funding in his committee position.”

Bell added, “And of course Norm has had a major impact on funding for Salisbury University, Wor-Wic Community College, the University of Maryland Eastern Shore and numerous non-profits through the state bond bill program, including support for the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore.”

The ShoreCAN Volunteer Center, sponsored by the Foundation, actively connects individuals who want to volunteer with nonprofit organizations who offer meaningful opportunities to serve.
