Foundation Grants $70,000 for Community Needs
October 14, 2008
The Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore, Inc. has awarded a series of Community Needs grants totaling $70,000 which were distributed recently to 18 government and nonprofit organizations in the Lower Eastern Shore of Maryland.

The grants will benefit – either directly or indirectly – the residents of the region, and are being awarded this fall from the Foundation’s Community Needs Funds.  The next deadline for qualified nonprofit organizations to apply for the second round of community needs grants during the 2009 fiscal year is December 1st.

“As the population of our area continues to grow, so do the needs of the nonprofit organizations serving our region,” said Spicer Bell, the Foundation’s President. “To help meet needs throughout Somerset, Wicomico and Worcester counties, we are pleased and excited to be able to help fund these worthwhile programs,” he added.

Grants in this cycle were awarded to the following nonprofits:

  • Cricket Center ( Worcester) to support a marketing/public relations campaign.
  • Hudson Health Services (Wicomico) to provide educational materials for individuals addicted to drugs and alcohol.
  • Wicomico County Fire Police Association (Wicomico) to provide funding for protective vests, radios and antennas, speaker microphones and flashlights for emergency responders.
  • Diakonia (Worcester) to develop and implement a Family Nurturing Program for shelter guests.
  • Public Radio Delmarva (Wicomico) to support a strategic planning process to guide the organization through the next 3-5 years and support a move to new facilities.
  • St. Andrew’s United Methodist Church (Wicomico) to support the cost associated with the implementation of an after-school tutoring program for 1st and 2nd graders from Prince Street Elementary.
  • Costen Recreation Council ( Somerset) to support costs associated with an after-school program.
  • Lower Shore Land Trust (Worcester) to support a stewardship coordinator, computer and supplies to establish the new position.
  • Maryland Coastal Bays Program (Worcester) to support marketing and communication activities of the Delmarva Environmental Educators Network, a coalition of 25 regional partners.
