The Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore awarded 4STEPS Therapeutic Riding Program a $5,000 Community Needs grant to support a part-time NARHA Registered Instructor to supervise therapeutic horseback riding lessons and animal partnership activities.

The 4STEPS Therapeutic Riding Program is a unique and holistic approach to therapy, rehabilitation, and recreation.  4STEPS is a NARHA (North American Riding for the Handicapped Association) Premiere Accredited Center and provides a safe environment and introduction for children and adults with disabilities to the benefits and joys of the healing powers of the horse.  Horseback riding is an effective form of therapy as it demonstrates the integration of body, mind, and spirit.

According to Sandy Winter, Executive Director, 4STEPS Therapeutic Riding Program, “We are extremely grateful to the Community Foundation for their support.  We currently have a waiting list because we are at maximum capacity for one instructor.  These funds will allow us to meet the growing need in our area.”

“In order to fulfill our mission to enhance and enrich the lives of individuals with disabilities by providing therapeutic horseback riding and animal partnership programs,” continues Winter, “it is necessary to insure the sustainability of the program.  By having a second instructor, we’re assured of an uninterrupted continuum of services.”

“We are proud to assist the 4STEPS Therapeutic Riding Program that benefits individuals and families with special needs,” said Spicer Bell, President, Community Foundation.  “I know Sandy and her team of volunteers bring unique talents and experiences in equine instruction.  Having an additional instructor will enable them to provide an even more diverse program.”
