Challenge raises $65,858 for Wicomico Child Advocacy Center
May 19, 2008
Residents from throughout Maryland’s Lower Eastern Shore have responded generously to a fund raising challenge to benefit the Wicomico County Child Advocacy Center by contributing $65,858 in just four weeks.

WMDT-47 and the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore (CFES) joined efforts in April by providing $20,000 for the Child Advocacy Center and challenged citizens in the region to match their initial contribution.

“The response was beyond our expectations,” said Spicer Bell, CFES president.  “We are grateful for the support the Child Advocacy Center has received.  The services the Center provides for local abused children and their families are essential to the community,” Bell added.  “All of the funds raised through this effort will support the Center’s efforts to break the cycle of child abuse and neglect in Wicomico County.”

Kathleen McLain, General Manager of WMDT-47, got the effort underway by successfully applying for a $10,000 grant from “Oprah’s Big Give”, a Sunday prime time television show created by Oprah Winfrey. The Community Foundation provided another $10,000 to double the matching challenge to the community.

McLain said, “We were pleased and touched by the community response to this effort.  It’s unfortunate that we need such services but, as a community, we are incredibly lucky to have this particular Center to fill that need.  All of us would like to offer our thanks to you for your response to our need with your very generous support.”

Anyone who wishes to contribute to the fund raising challenge, may still do so by sending checks to the Community Foundation of the Eastern Shore, 1324 Belmont Ave., Suite 401, Salisbury, MD 21804. In the check memo please write “Child Advocacy Center Fund”.
